What's Good for Dehydration Besides Water

Why You Need a Water Filtration System

The average publicly supplied water contains contaminants and heavy metals that can impact your overall health. If you use tap water for drinking, cooking and bathing, then a whole house filtration system can help remove many of these contaminants to provide safer drinking water.

Contaminated Water Supply

Although the Environmental Protection Agency has standards in place for regulating public drinking water, plenty of contaminants get into the groundwater and into the public water supply. Rural areas surrounded by farms may have pesticides or fertilizers leech into the groundwater. Large cities may have chlorine, fluoride and arsenic added to the water supply in an effort to purify the water and add a chemical that dentists are convinced people need more of for healthy teeth.

Other chemicals that may impact your water include aluminum, mercury, radium, uranium and a host of different bacteria and viruses. Many times water will look and smell just fine, but small traces of contaminants can cause health problems after many years of buildup in your body. Water filter systems are a good way to remove many of the toxins in your drinking water and improve your quality of life.

Whole-House Water Filter Systems

A whole-house water filter system is a system that will purify not only your drinking water but also the water you use for bathing, cooking and cleaning. These systems go underneath your counters and can filter out all sorts of chloramines, chlorine and volatile organic compounds like methylene and formaldehyde. If you have specific contaminants that need filtering, such as iron or fluoride, then you will need a whole-house filtering system specific for that contaminant.

Whole-house systems works by using carbon filtration to filter out contaminants. When you turn on the faucet the water is forced through the filtration system before making its way out of the faucet. A heavy-duty system will last you five to 10 years before replacing the filters depending on your water usage. A standard system works just as well as a heavy-duty system, but the filters must be replaced annually.

Portable Water Filter Systems

If you can't invest in a whole-house system because you rent your property or don't have the financing at the time, you can still safely filter your drinking and cooking water with a portable water filtration system. There are numerous water filters that sit on your counter top and hold up to a gallon or more of water for daily use. This is a great option for filtering drinking and cooking water without having to invest in a whole house system. Personal water bottles with filtration systems are another option for when you're on the go and don't want to buy plastic water bottles.

Water Softeners

Water softeners may seem like a filtration system, but water softeners are only designed to soften hard water components that contribute to a buildup of scale in your water pipes. Water softeners can make the water taste a bit better due to reducing scale buildup, but it won't filter out any contaminants.

Water Filter, Water Softener or Both

When it comes to a water filter vs water softener, you can have the best of both worlds. Many whole house filtration systems can combine a filter and a softener to provide you with the best quality of public water available. The two systems will work together to give you fresh tasting water and soft water. Softeners not only reduce buildup, but you should also notice an improvement when you wash dishes and do your laundry. Glasses shouldn't have spots and colors should stay brighter longer when using contaminant reduced, soft water.
